About Us

In a cocktail, on ice or neat. You'll have a new appreciation for gin.

Scofflaw Old Tom Gin is a tasty, versatile spirit. Created in Chicago in 2012, the product was born out of a need for a bespoke iteration of the Old Tom style, which is the slightly sweeter predecessor to London Dry. Our version carries classic notes of orange peel, juniper, and coriander while balancing on a subtle floral edge thanks to the addition of osmanthus blossoms in the distillation process. Its elevated proof is suitable in cocktails or unadorned. It's a complex, approachable creation that we couldn't be more proud of.

WHAT IS OLD TOM GIN?

In the timeline of gin's story, Old Tom Gin came after Genever and before London Dry. After the Gin Craze in Great Britain in the first half of the 18th century, distillation was forced underground and people started making gins of extremely questionable quality inside their homes. To mask the wretched flavor of these amateur spirits, people added sugar, thereby creating the Old Tom style. Luckily for us, Old Tom evolved, becoming a legitimate, high quality product by the turn of the 19th century. It was the go-to gin style until the 1910's; in fact, most pre-Prohibition cocktail recipes (including the Martini) called for Old Tom.
